Indian Stock Market Plunges as RBI's Rate Increase Triggers Wide-Scale Selling
New Delhi, 8 October 2026: On Thursday, October 8, Indian stock markets faced immense selling pressure, which was sparked by investors' reaction to the Reserve Bank of India's recent announcement on its monetary policy, rising inflation expectations, a depreciating rupee and continued outflow of foreign investments. Fynnedge, which tracks developments across the lending and financial services landscape, noted that the sharp market decline could also influence borrowing costs and investor sentiment in the broader financial ecosystem.
The Sensex plunged 1,045.46 points, or 1.44%, to close at 71,593.24, while the Nifty 50 declined 371.25 points, or 1.64%, ending the session at 22,231.80.
RBI Rate Hike Weighs on Market Sentiment
Investor sentiment weakened after the RBI increased the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and adopted a “calibrated tightening” stance. Investors had to reconsider their investments in relation to the impact of the decision on borrowing costs and the liquidity situation.
The central bank at the same time revised its forecast for the GDP growth rate in FY27 to 7.1% to reflect ongoing confidence in economic growth. The projection for inflation also saw an increase to 5.2%, making inflation an important indicator on investors' radar.
The announcement of tighter monetary policy combined with increasing inflation expectations resulted in a decline in equity prices across the board.
Broad-Based Selling Hits Major Sectors
The sell-off extended across virtually all major sectors. Auto, Energy, FMCG, Infrastructure, Media, Metals, Oil & Gas, Pharma and Realty indices declined between 2% and 3%.
Broader market segments also witnessed significant pressure, with both mid-cap and small-cap indices falling more than 2% during the session.
Among the major stocks that declined were Adani Enterprises, JSW Steel, Max Healthcare, ITC and InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo).
In comparison, Infosys, Axis Bank and HCL Technologies were some of the well-performing companies but did not help the fall in the overall return.
Weakness of The Rupee And Selling By FIIs Led To Pressure
The cautious sentiment was felt across currency and bond markets. Rupee traded at about ₹96.78 to US dollar while yield on 10-year government bond remains relatively high at about 7.24%.
There were further foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, which put further pressure on domestic stocks. The continued selling from abroad can impact liquidity and increase the volatility of the market, especially under weak currency and uncertain world conditions. F&O Ban List
The Futures and Options (F&O) ban for Thursday included Ambuja Cements, Bandhan Bank, LIC Housing Finance and Steel Authority of India (SAIL).
The restriction is generally triggered when open interest in a stock's derivative contracts exceeds the prescribed market limit. Derivative positions remain subject to restrictions until the open interest moves back within the permitted range.
TCS Delivers Strong Q2 FY27 Results
Despite the broader market weakness, corporate earnings offered some positive developments. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a Q2 FY27 profit of ₹13,934 crore, marking a 14.8% year-on-year increase.
The IT services company also announced a second interim dividend of ₹12 per share, providing a positive update for shareholders amid a weak trading session.
Global Markets Remain Under Pressure
The decline in Indian equities followed a subdued global market trend. US markets ended the previous session lower, with the Dow Jones falling 0.66%, the S&P 500 declining 0.22% and the Nasdaq slipping 0.22%.
Asian and European markets also remained under pressure, contributing to a broader risk-off environment.
Meanwhile, Germany raised its economic growth projections, forecasting 1.3% GDP growth for 2026 and 1.1% for 2027. The German government said external shocks had affected the economy less than previously anticipated.
Global Corporate Updates
Corporate earnings also remained in focus internationally. Constellation Brands reported Q2 fiscal 2027 revenue of $2.63 billion, beating consensus estimates by 2.46%.
Penguin Solutions reported Q4 2026 revenue of $566.69 million, exceeding estimates by 10.57%. The stronger-than-expected performance helped drive a 13.1% rise in its share price.
What the Market Decline Means
The October 8 market decline highlights the sensitivity of Indian equities to interest-rate decisions, inflation expectations, foreign capital flows, currency movements and global market trends.
For investors, the sharp fall reinforces the importance of maintaining a long-term financial approach rather than reacting solely to one trading session. For prospective borrowers, changes in monetary policy can also make it important to compare interest rates, repayment obligations and overall borrowing costs before taking a loan.
